You’re judged by the company you keep. At my old firm I was just doing the legal work and not really in charge of managing relationships. New leadership came in and wasn’t managing some of the relationships well. I tried to address it, but decided that it would be best to move on. I thought by leaving the firm, those clients would appreciate me leaving, but I’m still grouped with my old firm in their eyes. My new firm and I have similar values and I have ownership of my client relationships now. It’s great to be able to pick the people you want to work with and cultivate those relationships, but it’s a lot more responsibility, much more of a customer service aspect. I’m a very social person, but now I can’t be shy at all.
